23 Jul 2016
When it comes to obstructive sleep apnea and how it manifests, may differ between men and women. While men often report symptoms such as snoring, waking up gasping for air or snorting awake with a start, many women report symptoms like fatigue, anxiety and depression and a feeling of lethargy in the afternoon.
How To Diagnose Sleep Apnea
We believe the best means is to have a sleep analysis done. The latest technologies now mean that there are health clinics who can offer you the option of a home-based sleep study, as opposed to those done in cold stark laboratories or sleep chambers.
The technician will train you in hooking up the device and it’s electrodes, you simply fit the device prior to sleeping and it will record data pertaining to your heart rate, airflow, respiratory effort, the amount of oxygen in your blood, and the different sleep phases, the home testing device makes it possible for a Neurophysiologist to provide a diagnosis accurately.
Giving you the benefit of a customised treatment plan according to your personal results.
What are the most common symptoms?
– Waking up with a very sore or dry throat.
– Loud snoring, with sudden choking or gasping sensation, struggling to get air.
– Sleepiness, fatigue and/ or lack of energy during the day.
– Sleepiness while driving.
– Morning headaches on waking.
– Restless sleep or even insomnia.
– Forgetfulness, mood changes, and a decreased interest in sex or intimacy.
– Irritability.
It can be tough to identify sleep apnea on your own since the most prominent symptoms only occur when you’re asleep. But you can get around this difficulty by consulting your health care practitioner today, enquire as to what your options are and do not delay.
Long-term sleep deprivation and lack of oxygen have many health consequences, it has been associated with chronic illness and disease and the list continues to grow.
