Ageing, why do some people look old faster than others?

Ageing why do some people look old faster than others

Ageing is governed by a built-in biological clock, it is not controlled by food or lifestyle but rather by genetics. Evidence proves that what we see on the “outside” is often a reflection of what is happening on the inside. Wrinkles, liver spots, redness, change in texture are all indicators of changes in the body.

Ageing and the biological clock

International studies and analysis of DNA blood samples from more than 13,000 people (USA),  enabled scientists to create a biological predictor clock. This was then used to calculate the “predicted” life span of the people in the study. How does it work? Well, simply put this unique biological clock calculates the ageing of blood and other tissues by tracking the natural process of methylation, a process which chemically alters DNA over time.

Methylation what is it?

Methylation is essential for proper functioning of all body systems and occurs billions of times every second; it helps repair your DNA on a daily basis and controls homocysteine (an unhealthy compound that can damage blood vessels). As a result, this process recycles molecules for detoxification and maintains mood and inflammation. – (Excerpt – Dr. Mark Hyman)

What do the results reveal

Results revealed that 5 percent of the study grouped age at a faster biological rate, resulting in a shorter life expectancy. Scientists were stunned to see that the epigenetic clock can effectively predict the lifespans of Caucasians, Hispanics, and African-Americans effectively. The study allowed for adjustments as follows; age, gender, smoking, body mass index, disease history, and blood cell count. (UCLA -Sept. 28 in the journal Aging)

How to extend your lifespan?

A healthy lifestyle will definitely extend your lifespan, however, the innate ageing will ultimately prevent you from dodging death forever. As a result, the following factors should be avoided at all costs; smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure.

In conclusion

Studies such as these provide valuable clues which give insight into what causes human ageing. Therefore, these results mark the first step towards new and cutting edge methods to target and specifically slow down the process.

Sadly, these findings explain why some adults die young, despite having a nutritious diet, regular exercise, no smoking and no alcohol.
