Chemical Peels VS Microdermabrasion: What is the Difference?
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion both renew skin, but they work differently. Learn which treatment is right for your age, goals, and skin condition.
Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are effective skin treatments, but what sets one apart from the other?
Chemical Peels vs Microdermabrasion
Skin peels and microdermabrasion both exfoliate the skin on a deeper level, and as a result, they improve the appearance of skin. Microdermabrasion works best for superficial skin imperfections such as fine lines and wrinkles. Microdermabrasion is an excellent starting point for younger skin. Chemical peels, however, can be adapted to suit the client’s needs. Chemical peels are effective for mature skins which have additional requirements and concerns. Peels treat deep wrinkles, pigmentation, and scars.
Which treatment do I need?
During microdermabrasion, fine crystals are sprayed onto the surface of the skin via a unique applicator. This procedure removes dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin and encourages skin cell turnover. The treatment leaves the skin with a radiant, ‘rosy glow’ but will not significantly change the appearance of the skin surface. This procedure does not specifically target wrinkles or skin discolouration.
Peels remove the damaged uppermost layers of skin and target specific skin concerns, such as scarring, pigmentation, and ageing. Chemical peels have both cosmetic and medical uses and can be done by either a therapist or doctor, depending on the type of skin peel. The procedure offers noticeable results.
Distinct Differences
- Chemical peels are available in different strengths: mild, medium and deep. Deep peels can be painful and will require the use of a topical anaesthetic. They also often require a recovery period, so don’t be shy to ask. Side effects include a burning sensation, visible redness, discolouration, and even swelling of the skin
- Microdermabrasion does not vary in strength. During the treatment, there is a mild tingling and warm sensation. Depending on skin sensitivity, recovery from this procedure takes a few hours.
How Much Does it Cost?
They are more expensive than microdermabrasion. It is always best to seek professional advice and find a peel that suits your budget.
Treatment guidelines
